Working with ShopIt

How retainers work, communication across time zones, pricing, weekly staging releases, and switching developers.

How does ShopIt help me build and maintain my Shopify store?

ShopIt is a solo engineering studio run by Apoorv Bhatt. I partner directly with founders to build custom Shopify 2.0 storefronts, execute clean platform migrations, optimize conversion rates, and provide ongoing retainer engineering without agency bloat or handoffs.

When you work with ShopIt, you work directly with me from the first strategy call to the final code deployment. I handle three core needs for growing brands: launching bespoke stores from Figma designs or migrations, revamping product pages and checkouts for higher conversion, and maintaining high-demand stores on dedicated monthly retainers.

Instead of passing tickets between account managers and outsourced contractors, every line of Liquid, JavaScript, and schema is written and tested by an engineer who understands your revenue goals. Work is delivered in small, testable releases through Git staging themes so live sales are never interrupted.

What does a monthly retainer include?

A ShopIt retainer gives your store dedicated engineering hours every month. It covers bug fixes, theme speed optimization, promotional landing pages, loyalty program integrations, analytics tracking, and pre-sale stress testing, all shipped through weekly Git staging releases.

Retainers are designed for scaling stores that need reliable engineering without hiring a full-time in-house developer. On a single US store, I shipped over 1,400 retainer hours in one year, resolving more than 40 cart and checkout bugs while managing major event drops.

A typical monthly scope includes:

  • Checkout and cart drawer reliability audits to prevent lost sales
  • Building custom Liquid sections and campaign landing pages
  • Third-party app integrations (Klaviyo, Yotpo, Bloomreach, Gorgias)
  • Server-side tracking maintenance (Meta Conversions API and Google Analytics 4)
  • Pre-sale traffic prep and theme speed auditing

If your store only needs one small text edit a month, a monthly retainer is not necessary. Retainers are intended for brands actively testing marketing campaigns, adding features, and scaling catalog volume.

How much does it cost, and how do you price?

ShopIt quotes by scope rather than charging rigid pre-packaged rates. After a free 15-minute discovery call where I review your store code, timeline, and goals, I provide a transparent, fixed-scope project quote or a monthly retainer scope tailored to your budget.

No two DTC brands have identical codebases or scaling requirements. Quoting fixed rates before inspecting theme architecture or app conflicts often leads to hidden change orders later. I prefer transparent, upfront scoping based on the actual technical requirements of your project.

For store builds and revamps, you receive a milestone-based fixed scope. For continuous engineering, I offer monthly retainer agreements with guaranteed hours, rapid turnaround windows, and weekly staging deployments.

Every prospective project starts with a free 15-minute store and code audit to inspect bottlenecks before any quote is issued.

What happens in the free 15-minute audit?

The 15-minute audit is an informal technical review over Google Meet. I inspect your live storefront, mobile page speed, checkout path, and app script loading. You receive honest feedback on immediate conversion bottlenecks and code issues with no sales pitch.

Before or during the call, I review your storefront using browser developer tools and speed diagnostics. We walk through your current mobile cart experience, check for unoptimized third-party scripts, and evaluate whether your product pages have structured JSON-LD schema.

At the end of the call, I give you a direct recommendation. If your issues can be resolved with a simple app setting or theme adjustment you can do yourself, I will tell you. If custom engineering is required, I outline the scope and next steps.

How do weekly releases and staging work?

I maintain code in a GitHub repository synced to an unpublished Shopify staging theme. Work is developed, reviewed, and tested in this staging environment first. Once you approve the changes, the theme is safely published with zero disruption to active shoppers.

Editing code directly on a live Shopify theme is dangerous. A single unclosed Liquid tag or broken JavaScript snippet can freeze add-to-cart buttons and cost thousands in lost orders. ShopIt enforces a professional Git staging workflow on every project.

Here is how releases work in practice:

  1. Features and bug fixes are coded in isolated Git branches.
  2. Changes are pushed to an unpublished preview theme where you can test them live on desktop and mobile.
  3. We test edge cases: sold-out variants, discount codes, multi-currency display, and checkout drawer states.
  4. Upon your sign-off, changes are merged and published, with rollback snapshots retained in GitHub.

How do I switch from my current developer?

Switching is straightforward and requires zero store downtime. You grant collaborator access through your Shopify admin, invite me to your GitHub repository or theme code, and I conduct a comprehensive codebase audit to document technical debt before taking over active tasks.

Founders often worry that changing developers will break custom features or lose historical context. In reality, a smooth handover requires only clean credentials and an initial audit.

During onboarding, I inspect all custom Liquid templates, external script tags, and app embeds. I document any fragile patches left by previous developers and establish a clean GitHub repository if one does not already exist. Your live store continues processing orders normally throughout the entire transition.

Do you work in my time zone?

Yes. ShopIt is based in India and operates with structured daily overlap windows for clients in the US, Europe, and Asia. I run real-time Slack or WhatsApp communication during overlap hours and handle deep focus development while your local market is offline.

Over 8 client projects across the US, UK, and Asia have run successfully on this schedule. For US clients, early morning in North America overlaps directly with my evening, providing dedicated windows for real-time strategy calls, ticket triage, and live release reviews.

The time difference actually works to your advantage: bugs reported at the close of your US or European business day are frequently diagnosed, fixed, and staged for review before your team logs on the next morning.

Can you work with my existing store, theme and team?

Yes. You do not need to rebuild your store from scratch. I regularly step into established stores with third-party themes (like Prestige, Dawn, or Impulse) and collaborate directly with in-house designers, marketing leads, and agency partners.

Many brands have an existing theme they like, but need deep technical assistance to resolve buggy app integrations, speed bottlenecks, or custom Liquid logic. I am comfortable working inside established codebases and adapting to your team’s preferred workflow, whether via Slack, Asana, ClickUp, or Trello.

If your store has a dedicated UI designer, I translate their Figma or Adobe XD designs into pixel-perfect, responsive Liquid components that render cleanly on mobile.

What do you need from me to get started?

To begin, I only need collaborator access to your Shopify admin, access to your Figma designs or reference links (for new builds), and a 15-minute kick-off call to align on priority goals, target launch dates, and communication channels.

I keep onboarding friction minimal. You do not need to prepare complex technical specifications. A brief bulleted list of priorities or a Loom video walkthrough of what is broken is often enough for me to start diagnosing and scoping.

For a new store build or redesign, having high-resolution photography, brand guidelines, and approved copy helps us move quickly. For retainer maintenance, collaborator access allows me to audit the theme immediately.

Who owns the code, the store and the data?

You own 100% of your store, code, customer data, and theme assets from day one. I work via Shopify collaborator permissions without holding account ownership, and all custom code is committed directly to your private GitHub repository.

Some agencies lock clients into proprietary hosting wrappers or retain theme licenses to make switching difficult. ShopIt operates with complete transparency: you retain full ownership of your Shopify account, domain, payment gateways, and third-party app subscriptions.

Every custom section, snippet, and schema markup created during the engagement belongs entirely to your business. If you ever decide to transition to an internal hire, you have all code, documentation, and Git history ready to hand over.

AI and Shopify Development

Where AI tools excel, where raw AI code fails, how ShopIt uses curated prompts, and what stays human.

Why hire ShopIt when AI can build a store in minutes?

AI tools can generate functional basic layouts quickly, but high-converting stores require stable checkout behaviour, accurate analytics, fast page speeds, and brand-distinct UI. I use curated AI prompts to speed up scaffolding, while providing human engineering judgement for conversion, stability, and edge cases.

AI is a valuable tool for drafting boilerplate code and rapid prototypes. However, unvetted AI-generated Shopify code frequently introduces silent failures: sold-out add-to-cart freezes, broken mobile drawers, unoptimized image pipelines, and missing tracking events.

ShopIt uses AI with curated direction, tested prompts, and modern tooling to eliminate repetitive development tasks. That time is reinvested where AI cannot make business decisions: your brand positioning, custom discount logic, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and checkout resilience.

You get the delivery speed of modern AI workflows combined with an experienced developer accountable for how your store performs under real customer traffic.

Will an AI-assisted store look generic?

Not when guided by custom design systems. Raw AI generators reuse common templates and repetitive layouts. I write custom Liquid and CSS around your brand typography, editorial spacing, and custom visual storytelling to ensure your store looks distinct and premium.

When founders prompt general-purpose AI website builders without specific constraints, the output inevitably looks like every other dropshipping site. The reason is simple: large language models default to the most frequent patterns found on the web.

At ShopIt, AI is used strictly for internal scaffolding and code linting, never to dictate your visual identity. Your storefront is styled to match your bespoke Figma designs, luxury typography standards, and bespoke interactive elements like sticky add-to-cart bars and tiered discount drawers.

Can AI build a Shopify store on its own?

AI can generate simple theme files, create product descriptions, and suggest color schemes. However, it cannot configure payment gateways, resolve checkout edge cases, verify third-party app scripts, or guarantee reliable tracking without human technical oversight.

If you are launching a proof-of-concept store with two products and minimal budget, using built-in Shopify AI tools (like Shopify Magic) to write product copy and populate starter templates is an excellent, cost-effective way to get off the ground.

Once you invest in paid ad spend and scale order volume, raw AI begins to show severe limitations. AI models lack runtime context: they do not know how your theme handles variant change events on iOS Safari, whether your Klaviyo integration respects EU privacy consent, or how your tiered discount logic behaves with gift cards.

How does ShopIt use AI, and what stays human?

I use AI for rapid code scaffolding, automated linting, drafting repetitive schema structures, and analyzing analytics anomalies. Human engineering handles theme architecture, checkout logic, Core Web Vitals optimization, and launch-day stability.

Modern development is about efficiency without sacrificing craftsmanship. I maintain a proprietary library of tested prompts and automations that instantly generate boilerplate Liquid schema, JSON metafield mappings, and test fixtures.

What remains strictly human:

  • High-stakes checkout and payment flow validation
  • Cross-device testing across physical mobile devices and browsers
  • Negotiating trade-offs between third-party marketing apps and load speed
  • Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) entity graph modeling for your brand
  • Live staging deployments and regression checks before major promotions

What are the risks of AI-generated Shopify code?

The primary risks are hallucinated dependencies, severe DOM bloat, unhandled race conditions in cart mutations, and subtle SEO schema errors. These flaws rarely show during preview testing, but fail catastrophically during high-traffic sales events.

AI models are trained on millions of open-source repositories, including outdated Shopify vintage themes from 2018. When prompted carelessly, AI frequently writes obsolete Liquid syntax (like `include` instead of `render`), references non-existent JavaScript libraries, or creates memory leaks in mobile browsers.

A common failure occurs in AJAX cart drawers: AI code often fails to catch asynchronous network errors when a variant goes out of stock mid-browse, causing the cart button to spin endlessly without surfacing an error to the shopper.

Will AI replace Shopify developers?

AI is replacing low-complexity template assembly and basic copy generation. It is not replacing developers who understand eCommerce architecture, conversion mechanics, API integrations, and checkout reliability under peak traffic.

Developers who only install pre-built themes and make minor CSS color tweaks will struggle as automated site builders mature. However, ambitious DTC brands do not just need a site that displays products; they need high-speed storefronts that integrate seamlessly with ERPs, custom loyalty APIs, and multi-channel marketing stacks.

The best developers embrace AI as an acceleration layer, shipping higher quality work in half the time while taking personal accountability for the client’s revenue infrastructure.

How do I use AI for product descriptions without hurting SEO?

Use AI to generate structured feature drafts, but always review and inject unique product specifications, real customer use cases, and proprietary brand voice. Search engines and AI answer engines penalize generic, duplicated AI prose that offers no unique value.

Large language models excel at synthesizing raw manufacturer bullet points into clean, readable copy. The danger lies in publishing unedited AI text across hundreds of SKUs, resulting in repetitive phrases and thin content that Google filters out of search indexes.

To maintain high search and answer-engine rankings, ensure your product pages combine AI-drafted narrative descriptions with structured metafield tables: exact dimensions, materials, care instructions, and answers to common customer objections.

Getting Started

Platform evaluation, choosing Shopify plans, theme selection, timelines, and pre-launch preparation.

How long does a new store or a revamp take?

A bespoke Shopify 2.0 store build or platform migration typically takes 3 to 6 weeks from kick-off to launch. A conversion-focused PDP and checkout revamp usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, delivered through weekly Git staging releases.

Timelines vary primarily based on design readiness, catalog complexity, and third-party integrations. When Figma designs, high-resolution photography, and product data are prepared upfront, development moves rapidly.

A typical project timeline follows four structured stages:

  1. Week 1: Theme setup, design tokens, typography, and core global components.
  2. Week 2: Custom Liquid templates for homepage, product detail pages, and collection filters.
  3. Week 3: Third-party app connections, payment gateways, and analytics schema setup.
  4. Week 4: Cross-browser QA, mobile speed optimization, and launch-day DNS cutover.
